Training Your Pit Bull Terrier With Dog Treats

Every responsible Pit Bull owner wants a well trained pet. There are several training options which may be used to achieve the desired results. One of the most popular methods used by owners is treat training. Treat training is a reward system using either the dog’s favorite snack food such as cheese, bits of hotdog or by using store bought treats.

Treat training allows the owner to use these small bribes as a form of positive reinforcement for good behavior. Proper use of treat training will enable you to teach your Pit Bull to follow the sit, come and lie down commands, as well as teach him almost any trick you can imagine. If used with friendly rubs and praises, it can also assist you to housebreak your Pit Bull.

To teach your Pit Bull to sit, you’ll need to prepare a treat bag just before you begin. A plastic zip top baggy comes highly recommended by me for use as a treat container. It allows you to put the treats in your pocket while allowing you to keep your pockets from getting soiled and soggy. Believe me, try it without the baggy and you’ll not try it that way again. This is especially true if you opt to use bits of table food such as the cheese and hotdog slices.

Decide upon what you will use as the treat. Think of what your Pit Bull likes to eat, but you don’t give him very often. This makes an irresistible bribe, and you will see faster results than if you’d used an every day treat. Once you’ve chosen your bribe, put the baggy in your pocket so you can reach it easily. Don’t try to hold the bag in your hand, as this will distract your Pit Bull, and may even get him to jumping up in an attempt to try and grab the entire bag.

If you have more than one Pit Bull, or other dog for that matter, take the time to put the other dog away so you can do one on one training. Other animals in the vicinity will only hamper your training as your Pit Bull will think the session is a competition for which dog can get the treat fastest, rather obedience training.

Now that you’ve prepped your treat bag and have your Pit Bull alone with you, it’s time to begin.

Take a bit of your chosen treat and hold it above your Pit Bull’s head while giving the command to “sit.” If you hold the treat high, the dog will have to sit to see the treat. Once he sits, give him the treat and be sure to praise him as a “good boy” for the sit. You can repeat this four or five more times, but after that give it a rest until the next day. I know it doesn’t sound like rigorous training, but it is considered a full session.

Once your Pit Bull has mastered the “sit” command, start to gradually offer gentle rubs and praises rather than treats. You’ll eventually phase out the food treats, and your Pit Bull will continue to sit on command.

Using treat training is an effective and gentle way to train your Pit Bull. It also allows you to be close to your pet for a session of giving treats and praises. Imagine how much your Pit Bull will enjoy that!

Aeration: - essential factor to aquarium fish.

As we all know rivers and lakes are the natural habits for fish and other marines. Rivers and lakes have large surface area which makes maximum provision of oxygen for fish survival possible. On the other hand aquarium is not like river or lake, it has a smaller surface area and there is limited movement of habitats.

This makes provision of alternative means of oxygen for fish to breathe important. This artificial process of providing oxygen is called aeration. It's a simple process of re-oxygenating the water in aquarium tank.

The Aerating System:

This is the series of material that increases the supply of air (thereby increasing oxygen concentration) they are:
the air pump
t-pieces
rubber tubing
clamp or regulator
diffusers or airstone

Air pumps come in different shapes and sizes but the most popular ones are tecax air pump from Taiwan together with 'dyna free, and the dragon' another popular one is super 555 from India though cheaper, but not as rugged. Occasionally available are the more expensive whisper and rens air pumps from Uk and rance respectively. Always place air pumps above the water level hooked to a non-vibrating material.

You can accomplish aeration in your aquarium tank by using the above listed aeration materials. This materials form aeration system. For small tanks all you need is to attach simple aquarium air pump to airstone by means of rubber air tube. The system will be blowing air into the water which cause motion in aquarium tank and thus provide necessary oxygen your fish needs to breathe in aquarium.

Why Socializing Your Dog Is Important

Socializing your dog is one of the most essential skills your pet needs to acquire. A child needs to learn how to relate to the world, same goes for your dog, she needs to learn how to behave amongst dogs and humans. When I was a child, I had a dog not well socialized due to lack of knowledge and experience in handling a pet. Dannie, my first dog, do not like other dogs and would bark excessively when he sees one even from afar. Most times, when the other dog is nearby, he would act aggressive towards the other dog. It is embarrassing and it was difficult to handle a dog not socialized.

So take time to socialize your dogs with their own kind, start when they are puppies after they have completed their course of basic immunisation. Socialising them early will get them confident and used to human societies at a young age. With that, you can be confident to bring him anywhere you want. A good place to start to socialize your dog is any public parks as it is very likely you will meet fellow dog owners and let the dogs mingle and have fun together.

Once your dog is well socialized, you can take him anywhere with confidence and you know they will be comfortable in all situations. Dogs can sense your nervousness and defensiveness. Notice an aggressive dog in future, you will realize that their owners are usually fearful of approaching your dog or some other dogs in the park as well. Dogs sense their owners fear readily and will act out to protect the owner.

When starting to socialize your pet, avoid places with running and screaming children everywhere. Keep the dog at a safe distance from children and allow him to observe when there are too many children. Do not be nervous as your dog can pick up your emotions as well and could act in self defense unnecessarily. Bring him to the park daily and get him used to the noise and excitement of the children. If children come up and want to pat your dog, make sure that it is in a controlled environment, i.e. one child at a time. Observe your dog, if he is enjoying it, allow it to happen naturally. As confidence builds up between children and your pet, then will you allow children to come up to him freely.

Your dog is a member of our society, ensure they are well socialized to avoid accidents from happening to the general public (e.g. biting fellow human). News of Dogs that bite are usually not socialized or that they have been abused or taught to attack humans in the past. Such dogs are frequently put down when efforts to untrain them prove fruitless. It is a sad but a reality in most societies that aggressive dogs must be put down to prevent more incidents.

We can do our part to ensure they start to mingle with humans and make the engagements fun filled. Get some friends who are dog friendly (avoid children as they are unpredictable) to assist you on this. Seek professional assistance if you are not confident to handle any behavourial problem on your own.

Diamond In The Ruff -- Meet The Cairn Terrier

The Cairn terrier hails from Scotland, as do its close and outstanding relatives, the Scottish terrier and the West Highland terrier. Much like another cousin, the Welsh terrier, the Cairn is probably an underappreciated breed in the United States, while it remains wildly popular in the old country. But its relative dark horse status is likely just fine with serious Cairn fans.

Unlike several fancier strains of terrier, the Cairn has never been subjected to uptown clips and beauteous barbering, like the Kerry or the Wire terrier. As a result, the Cairn can look pretty shaggy in comparison, and resembles the working dog he was born and bred to be. Cairns, after all, were named after the cairns or piled stones in the Scottish Highlands they so often set themselves to digging through, looking for rats. The Cairn was a fearless hunter of vermin and rouster of foxes, with strong claws, teeth, and an absolutely nonnegotiable hunting instinct. He is not the type of dog you can set loose in the park.

The Cairn terrier is a convenient size for most modern families, weighing only about 13 or 14 pounds. He is tough and resilient, and has a genuine liking for children, although you'll still need to make sure that they treat him gently, like any other dog. The Cairn is a cheerfully independent type with an incredibly sharp brain. You'll want to give him some interesting jobs around the house and make sure he stays as challenged as possible (otherwise, he’s likely to challenge your flower beds). Even though many modern small dogs essentially end up as lapdogs, the Cairn has the smarts and the perseverance to be much more.

Despite his shaggy locks, some terrier lovers find a unique and rustic beauty in this breed. If you want an active, enthusiastic, tough little terrier companion, the Cairn deserves your serious consideration.

Cairns come in almost all colors -- anything but white conforms to type. Anyone wanting to add a small, sharp and very affectionate dog to their family unit would do well to consider the long-lived Cairn.

Protecting Our Horses With Horse Insurance

Insurance of all kinds has become endemic in our society today; car insurance, home owners insurance, health insurance, and everything in between. The role of insurance in our lives is the protection of our assets. And when it comes to horse insurance, the goals are the same. For those who own one or more horses, horse insurance provides them with the same peace of mind as any other insurance policy.

Just as a serious collector of antique cars would think nothing of purchasing a comprehensive insurance policy to protect his financial interests, the owners of horses must similarly protect their interests. Horse insurance policies are purchased just like any other insurance policy - through reputable underwriters that specialize in this particular type of insurance. The breadth and subsequent price of the insurance policy depends on the type and level of coverage that the horse owner chooses to purchase.

In most cases, horse insurance is purchased because the livelihood of the horse owner depends on the functionality of the horse. For instance, those horses that are used for racing or breeding - and subsequently bring their owners a financial return - are often considered to be prime candidates for horse insurance.

There are a number of different options when it comes to horse insurance and each owner must examine the policies as they relate to their particular situation. Insurance policies can often be customized to fit the owner's particular situation and needs but there is some common practices standard to most policies.

One such horse insurance policy includes coverage for the death of the animal. In this case, the owner receives a pre-determined lump sum payout in the event of an untimely death of the horse.

In the event of permanent incapacitation, due to injury or illness, the horse insurance policy will often pay the owner a percentage of the amount the horse would have earned throughout a healthy lifetime. This coverage is often extended to race or show horses.

For horse breeders, a horse insurance policy that covers infertility is often necessary, as the inability to breed particular horses could result in a significant loss of revenue.

In some cases, owners will purchase a horse insurance policy that acts much like a health insurance policy for humans, covering major medical care in the event of illness, and even specific surgical procedures should the animal require surgical intervention.

There are often caveats placed on a particular horse insurance policy that extends coverage for injury or death to the horse as a result of particular risk factors such as lightening or during the transportation of the horse. These are factors that are spelled out in detail in the policy and are often pricey add-ons. But, depending on the particular situation, it may be well worth the cost.

Most importantly, it is essential that anyone interested in purchasing a horse insurance policy do so through a knowledgeable and trustworthy underwriter. If you are unclear about a particular company's reputation, you should be sure to do your homework. Just as you do with any other insurance policy, get a variety of quotes and comparison shop. In so doing, you can find horse insurance that makes significant allowances for the care of your horse and subsequently protects your financial interests.

Keeshond Puppy And Dog Information

The Keeshond is a dog that can live in an apartment as long as frequent long walks are available. She is fairly active indoors and makes a good watch dog because she generally likes to bark. She is great with older, considerate children and wants to be a part of the family. As reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog. She can be fine with other dogs and pets, especially if extensively socialized early. She loves everyone, especially her human family.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Keeshond is 17 to 19 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 35 to 40 pounds. The females range a bit smaller then the males.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and Keeshond is no exception. Be on the look out for the Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), genetic eye disease, heart defects and skin problems. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Keeshond has long, harsh, straight hair standing from a soft, thick undercoat. She sheds the undercoat twice a year, seasonally. She needs to be carefully brushed Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

*Life Span. The Keeshond can live between 13 and 15 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

*History. The Keeshond comes from the Netherlands where they were probably bred from the Pomeranian, Samoyed, Chow Chow and Elkhound. They were used to guard canal boats. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1930.
